Brownout!

Candle flame
Shutter: 2.500 s | Aperture: f/8.0 | Focal Length: 17.7mm | Flash Used: No

We experienced a power outage a few hours ago.

Obviously, I had nothing to do. So when I saw the lit candles on the dining table, I decided to play with my camera again. Hehehehe. I grabbed Jon’s tripod and started setting up. After (literally) sweating over the dining room table, tinkering with the candle, everything was finally in place. But just as I was about to take my first shot, guess what happened? That’s right. The lights came back! Waaaaaaaahhhh! Excellent timing, huh? So I had to turn off all the lights and mimic the brownout setting so that I could just take a few shots. Pathetic, I know!

:P

Guess what this is.

bai, naa ko night shot bai pero blurry man cya,
any tips?
naa sa ako site and pic bai, Our Lady Of Lourdes na church bai

Bai, Clarence! :)

I’m not exactly the person to turn to for tips. I’m just a newbie, and a very awkward one at that. Hehehehe.

Well, in lieu of so-called “tips”, let me just share something that I’ve learned from friends, from various readings, and of course, from experience itself.

One word, bai — TRIPOD.

In order to get a sharp image, especially in low light conditions, use a tripod.

With tripod support, you can be assured that your camera is steady. As a result, you won’t have to worry about camera shakes/movements which may cause blurriness in your photo. Additionally, with a tripod, you can easily adjust your shutter speed and aperture to take a decent night shot. I tend to shoot in slow shutter speeds during low light conditions for a brighter image. Ironically, I do that using a camera which (admittedly) has huge limitations in low light. As opposed to DSLRs, which can shoot at ISO 800 without the noise, my camera already displays tangible noise even at ISO 200 (but I’m not complaining!). In general, most cameras are particularly sensitive to camera shakes/movements at slow shutter speeds. To counter this effect, you have to use a tripod to steady your shot.

Now, with the ability to adjust your shutter speed and aperture (without worrying about shakes - thanks to the tripod), you can now experiment with night shots without using a flash and capture an image just as it is - i.e., what your eyes are seeing.

If you don’t have a tripod, try to lean on something stable (like a pillar or a tree) or support your camera with something that is steady to prevent shakes/movements. You can either place your camera against a solid object or perch it on a stable platform.

Here are photos for comparison.

Pic 1: Shot this just a few hours after I got my cam last December 2007. Night shot testing. Hehehehe.
Without Tripod
Shot this with a shutter speed of 1 second. No tripod. No flash. So obviously, due to the somewhat long exposure and the unsteadiness, it’s a blurry shot.

Pic 2: Shot this just a couple of nights ago. This time using Jon’s tripod (which I have yet to return - hehehe).
With Tripod
Shutter speed is 10 seconds. No flash.

You can see the difference. A 1 sec shot without a tripod against a 10 sec shot with a tripod. :)

Here’s another shot. The Capitol in the evening. I again used a tripod for this take (thanks, Jan Ralph!). Still no flash.

I hope I’m not confusing you. Hehehe. As I said, I’m not very good in conveying my thoughts in writing. Hahaha! Magkuyog nalang nya ta ug shoot!

Hope this helps, bai! :)
